The Federal Court of Australia has recently handed out a $30,000 fine to a person who claimed to be a tax agent but wasn’t. Details of the case are here: http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/cases/cth/FCA/2012/642.html

Before you get your tax return done this year, check that the person is a registered tax agent, if they aren’t then ask if anyone at the firm is registered and demand that the registered person prepare your tax return. Why let a junior/trainee staff member prepare your return? Ask for their experience and qualifications. Remember – it’s your money.
